Mapping media freedom

About

Mapping Media Freedom identifies threats, violations and limitations faced by members of the press throughout European Union member states, candidates for entry and neighbouring countries.

This project — which is co-funded by the European Commission — is operated by Index on Censorship in partnership with the European Federation of Journalists and Reporters Without Borders. Mapping Media Freedom works together with the European Centre for Press and Media Freedom (ECPMF).

The Mapping Media Freedom platform provides a secure tool to submit and search reports of threats and violations to media freedom and pluralism. We also publish news, features and analysis on media freedom in the monitored countries. Further publications, training opportunities, access to legal support and resources are available via the Resource Centre.

Mapping Media Freedom also hosts Free Our Media!, an initiative of the European Youth Press that involves a graphic novel, country profiles and other educational material on media freedom in Europe.

How it works

How It WorksAcross Europe, censorship and media freedom violations take different forms. Through a partnership between Index on Censorship, European Federation of Journalists and Reporters Without Borders, the programme maps the state of media freedom by crowdsourcing reports from journalists, press freedom watchdogs and others committed to improve freedom of expression and information in the region.

From information to action

How It WorksMonitoring and mapping media freedom violations is the first step to fight impunity, analyse threats and challenges, and provide appropriate support to journalists at risk. Mapping Media Freedom aims to support all media professionals by equipping them with a tool that outlines risk in each country and offers solutions for change via awareness campaigns, policy recommendations and training.
